Support is the central technique in this form of psychotherapy. Factors relating to this support are:-

- Empathy - a very important component of this form of therapy. If the therapist has the capacity to feel into the patient's experiences, and communicate this sensitively, then the patient is more likely to feel relaxed and accepted by the therapist. - Encouragement - by stressing the patient's strengths and capabilities, which serves to increase a patient's self-esteem and prevents demoralisation. - Explanation - important if the patient misunderstands certain issues relating to health or his circumstances. - Guidance - covert or open, appropriate if obstacles are faced or decisions have to be made. - Practical Support - by modelling to the patient how disruptive factors in their life can be modified or by modification of disruptive factors by the therapist
