A variety of terms have been used to describe disorders of vulval epithelial growth including:

  • kraurosis vulvae - "dry" vulva
  • leukoplakia - white plaques
  • lichen sclerosus et atrophicus - lichen sclerosus with atrophic change
  • hyperplastic vulvitis

The most recent classification by the International Society for the Study of Vulvar Diseases recommend three categories:

  • hyperplastic dystrophy
  • lichen sclerosus
  • mixed dystrophy
