A immunohistochemical classification of crescentic glomerulonephritis has proven to be useful. The glomerulonphritides are divided according to the pattern of IgG or C3 deposition in the glomerular basement membrane:

  • type I:
    • linear immunofluorescence
    • anti-GBM is present
    • may be associated with Goodpasture's disease

  • type II:
    • granular immunofluorescence
    • immune complex mediated
    • associated with decreased C3 or C4

  • type III:
    • negative immunofluorescence
    • "pauci-immune" glomerulonephritis
    • usually ANCA positive
