Investigations

Authoring team

During crises, the blood film shows Heinz bodies - denatured haemoglobin inclusions - within the red cells when stained with a reticulocyte stain. The blood count is normal between crises.

The level of G6PD in red cells can be assayed directly.

Investigations for other causes of haemolytic anaemia should be performed.
