Prognostic indicators

The main prognostic factor is patient age at presentation.

Poor prognosis is suggested by:

  • age > 60 years
  • history of myelodysplasia or myeloproliferative disease
  • AML following exposure to cytotoxic drugs
  • WBC > 50 x 10^9 / litre
  • AML with features of trilineage dysplasia
  • CNS or other extramedullary disease at presentation
  • certain chromosome abnormalities e.g. monosomy 5 & 7
