The patient may present acutely with:

  • fever
  • lymphadenopathy
  • hepatosplenomegaly

There may be a long latent period, for example 20 years, followed by signs of:

  • multiorgan invasion and damage, affecting especially the heart and smooth muscle of the gut

Gastrointestinal features include:

  • megaoesophagus
  • dilated stomach
  • megacolon

Cardiac features include:

  • dilated cardiomyopathy
  • conduction defects
