Cryptococcosis

Infection with Cryptococcus neoformans is most common in the immunosuppressed:

  • the elderly
  • AIDS
  • patients receiving chemotherapy
  • Hodgkin's disease

It may result in meningitis, pulmonary, or gastrointestinal involvement.

Investigations:

  • microscopy (Indian ink dye)
  • culture of biopsies or CSF
  • complement fixation test

Management:

  • amphotericin plus 5-flucytosine
