Cutaneous leishmaniasis may be diagnosed by Giemsa staining of:

  • slit skin smears
  • tissue aspirated from the margin of an ulcer

Leishmania may be cultured in NNN (Novy-McNeal-Nicolle) medium.

Serological titres are usually low.

Leishmanin reactivity is absent in diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis.
