- fluid overload
- caused by overenthusiastic treatment and too rapid hydration
- patients have pulmonary oedema, facial congestion, increased JVP or ascites
- restriction of IV fluids and bolus doses of intravenous furosemide (frusemide) can be used to manage until the patient is stable
