Biochemical studies
The cells in the amniotic fluid or chorionic villus sample may be screened for the presence of inborn errors of metabolism such as Gaucher's disease, Niemann-Pick disease and Tay-Sach's disease.
CVS is increasingly prefered for biochemical studies.
