The principles of inguinal hernia repair are:
- meticulous technique to identify structures and ensure haemostasis
- reform the normal anatomy as best possible
- excise or reduce the hernial sac
- only approximate similar structures e.g. aponeurosis to tendon
- suture must retain its strength
- repair the posterior wall of the canal
