The lower brachial plexus may be damaged as a result of irradiation of the axilla for breast carcinoma. The most likely cause is entrapment due to fibrosis. Onset may be delayed by 5-30 months following treatment.

It is distinguished from direct metastasis by the less severe pain, a less widespread lesion, and the absence of a Horner's syndrome.
