The ankles and feet are almost as common a site for affliction by rheumatoid arthritis as at the wrist and hands. The classical three stages of rheumatoid pathology - synovitis, destruction and deformity - occur in feet joints as elsewhere.

The pathology of rheumatoid arthritis of the feet may be considered in two clinical presentations:

  • involving the ankle and hindfoot
  • involving the forefoot
