The patient usually has rheumatoid arthritis that is affecting other joints. The patient complains of a gradual development of pain. Generally, this is felt in the groin and down the front of the thigh. As the disease advances the patient may complain on pain whilst getting in and out a chair, or even whilst moving in bed.
There may be marked wasting of the buttock muscles. The affected leg is generally held in external rotation and fixed flexion. There is painful restriction of all movements.
