Superior surface

The superior surface of the clavicle is associated with the following structures, from medial to lateral:

  • interclavicular ligament
  • sternocleidomastoid - clavicular head; medial third of the superior surface
  • cervical fascia:
    • two layers attached separately to bone
    • invest sternocleidomastoid medially and trapezius laterally
  • trapezius muscle:
    • origin passes around onto posterior surface
    • in continuity with acromial origin laterally
