  • surgical procedures e.g. hip and hernia operations, cannulation of the femoral artery
  • trauma - blunt injuries and stab wounds to the upper thigh, pelvic and hip fractures
  • iliac compartment syndrome e.g. secondary to a haematoma due to a bleeding diathesis
  • diabetic amyotrophy
  • tumours
  • being placed in the lithotomy position e.g. in gynaecological surgery
