Pathogenesis
The pathogenesis of hypertensive encephalopathy is:
- spasm resulting in microinfarction of cerebral vessels
- forced dilatation producing petechial haemorrhage
- increased vascular permeability leading to oedema
These changes are most severe within the brainstem.
