meningitis - patient factsheet

1. Key Symptoms to Watch For
Symptoms can appear in any order and may look like a hangover, flu, or a stomach bug. Seek help immediately (Call 999) if you or a loved one experiences:
- A high temperature that comes on suddenly.
- A rash or spots that do not fade when a glass is pressed against them.
- A stiff neck or severe, worsening headache.
- Sensitivity to bright lights or confusion/extreme sleepiness.
- Cold hands and feet, or joint and muscle pain.
2. Protecting Ourselves (NHS Vaccines)
The UK offers several routine vaccines that protect against the most dangerous causes of meningitis. Please check that you or your children are up to date:
- Infants: MenB (8 & 12 weeks, 1 year), 6-in-1, and Pneumococcal vaccines.
- Teenagers (13–14 years): MenACWY vaccine (usually given at school).
- Adults (65+): Pneumococcal vaccine.
- All ages: MMRV (protects against viruses that can lead to meningitis).
3. Resources
- Medical Advice: Call 111 if you are worried but unsure.
- Vaccine Safety: You can report any suspected side effects to the Yellow Card scheme via their website or app.
- Eligibility: Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you have questions about which vaccines you should have.
