Clinical features
The clinical features of neuromyelitis optica are:
- rapid, bilateral and occasionally, complete, visual loss
- spinal cord symptoms follow hours, days or weeks later after visual signs:
- back and girdle pain
- paraesthesia and weakness in lower limbs
- extensor plantars
- urinary retention
There may be a preceding upper respiratory infection.
