The child is usually between 9 years and puberty. The child may be of the opposite or the same sex. Most paedophiles become known when they are in middle age, but there is no evidence to suggest that there desire for sexual relationships with prepubertal children is a change in their sexual makeup. It appears that paedophiles have always had sexual desires towards children.
Two thirds of children involved in paedophilia have co- operated in sexual activity more than once. This is out of fear rather than interest.
