There are a range of prognostic factors for SAH:

  • grade, according to the scheme of Hull and Hess:
    • I - headache and mild meningism } 95% cure, 1% mort.
    • II - severe headache and meningism
    • III - confused or focal signs
    • IV - drowsy } 35% mortality, 35% morbidity
    • V - comatose } 35% mortality, 35% morbidity

  • age - the younger the patient, the better the prognosis

  • hypertension - increasing morbidity with increasing blood pressure - ischaemic deficiency

  • amount of blood seen on CT - the less blood there is, the less vasospasm occurs
