- the annual incidence of retinal detachment is around 1 in 10 000 with a male to female ratio of 1:1 (1)
- the life time risk of retinal detachment at the age of 85 is 3%
- incidence is lower amongst blacks while the incidence amongst the white and asian populations are equal
- the average age of presentation is around 60 years (2)
