The entry of amino acids into gluconeogenesis is dependent on enzymes specific to individual compounds. Amino acids which can be interconverted to glucose are described as gluconeogenic and include:

  • arginine
  • aspartate
  • glutamate
  • histidine
  • isoleucine
  • methionine
  • phenylalanine
  • proline
  • tyrosine
  • valine
