Recommended daily dose of calcium is 800 mg per day for adults and children more than 1 year of age, plus an additional 400 mg per day in adolescence, pregnancy and lactation.

Only about 40% of the oral dose is absorbed and factors which affect absorption e.g. dietary phytates, should be taken into account.
