An oral diet ought always to be used if a patient can eat or drink without assistance.

It is important to note that there are methods available to maintain an oral diet - for example adjusting the texture of food in a patient who has problems with chewing or with swallowing.

It should also be noted that a properly (individually designed) fluid diet can meet a patient's daily nutritional needs.
