Criteria for admission of children with malnutrition include:

  • weight less than 60% of normal for population
  • oedema
  • poor appetite
  • infection

Priorities of treatment are as follows:

  • correct dehydration
  • treat infections, trying to avoid the use of intravenous drugs in oedematous patients
  • give supplements
  • give calories
