There are primary and secondary powers:

  • the primary power is the process of uterine contraction, relaxation and retraction
  • the secondary powers are the voluntary contraction of the muscles of the diaphragm and abdominal wall

There are several disorders of uterine action:

  • hypotonic contraction
  • hypertonic contraction
  • constriction ring formation

Voluntary contractions are disrupted by exhaustion, dehydration, and emotional distress.
