Prognosis

Authoring team

The prognosis depends on the type of tumour and the aggressiveness of the lesion:

  • benign mediastinal tumours, if excised, usually have a good prognosis
  • thymomas:
    • benign - excellent prognosis but there is a 2% recurrence rare if excision is incomplete
    • malignant type I - excellent prognosis if resection is complete
    • malignant type II - approximate 20% 5-year survival after treatment.
  • neuroblastomas - there may be as high as a 60% 5-year survival rate after treatment.
