Differential diagnosis
This includes:
- septic arthritis - leucocytosis and other evidence of infection
- Perthes disease - persistent pain and/or effusion i.e. more than two weeks
- slipped upper femoral epiphysis - characteristic x-ray
- osteomyelitis - evidence of infection
- trauma - history
- tuberculous synovitis
