Nipple and areola
If the nipple is retracted the examiner presses gently on each side to see if it will evert. Palpate the breast deep to the nipple. If a lump can be felt, see whether moving it accentuates nipple retraction, or initiates it.
Check for discharge. Press the areola in different areas to enable the duct from which it emanates to be identified, and hence, the segment involved. Test for blood and take a swab for culture.
