The classic tetrad of treatment for sprains and minor joint injuries consists of:

  • Rest
  • Ice packs - at home, a pack of frozen peas in a towel are effective as it can be moulded to the part
  • Compression - but do not use if too painful as the joint surfaces may be bruised
  • Elevation
