Infectious agents
Staphylococcus aureus is the most common agent.
Also:
- Streptococcus pyogenes
- pneumococcus
- Haemophilus influenzae, especially in those under three years
- gonococcus
- gram negative rods, such as E. coli, Pseudomonas
Septic arthritis may be primary, or secondary to osteomyelitis of an adjacent bone.
