There are some useful clinical indices towards the likely organism in meningitis:

  • meningococcus - petechial rash
  • pneumococcus - fractured skull, ear disease, congenital central nervous system lesion
  • coliforms - congenital central nervous system lesion
  • partially treated pyogenic infection - previous antimicrobial therapy
  • enterovirus - rash or pleurodynia
  • polio - foreign travel or immunisation
  • leptospirosis - occupational history infected water, prostration, myalgia, conjunctivitis and jaundice
