Phenylalanine is an aromatic amino acid where the R group in the formula NH2-HCR-COOH is -CH2-benzene ring. It is an essential amino acid that is a precursor of tyrosine.

The conversion of phenylalanine to tyrosine is deficient in phenylketonuria.
