Factors increasing surfactant
Factors which increase the amount of surfactant produced by a foetus or neonate include:
- prolonged rupture of membranes
- maternal hypertension and pre-eclampsia
- steroids given to the mother
- sickle cell disease in the mother
- alcohol abuse by the mother
