These may be classified as developmental or accidental.

Developmental crises include:

  • adolescence
  • menopause
  • retirement These form of crises are encountered naturally and inevitably during the human life-cycle.

Accidental crises include:

  • redundancy
  • premature death of a spouse or a child
  • loss of a limb

All people experience crises in their lives; for this reason a state of crisis cannot be regarded as abnormal.

The successful resolution of crisis involves the development of new coping resources and promotes psychological growth. It is only when people develop maladaptive methods of coping with a crisis such as taking an overdose or suffering a breakdown, that they become known to the psychiatric services.
