Speech
Speech should be assessed for the presence of four features:
- spontaneity:
- there may be delay in depressive disorder
- manic patients may be uninterruptable
- rate:
- decreased in depression
- increased in mania
- amount:
- decreased (or absent) in depression
- increased in mania
- continuity:
- speech may lack logical connections (loosening of associations)
- the patient may flit from one topic to another (flight of ideas)
