Psychotherapy (explorative)

Authoring team

In this type of psychotherapy there is an attempt to explore the way in which the patient relates to the therapist in an attempt to modify and understand the patient's relationships with other people. The aims are:-

  • relief of neurotic symptoms
  • improvement of the patient's relationship with themself and other people

There are many alternate ways of treating neurotic symptoms such as anxiety, phobic anxiety etc. However this technique is often appropriate for treating patients whose neurotic symptoms result from the ways in which they relate to other people.

Explorative psychotherapy may be used in combination with other treatment measures eg antidepressants, behaviour therapy.
