Bronchial cytology
Bronchial cytological sampling is performed throught the flexible bronchoscope:
- the area of interest is washed in saline which is immediately aspirated
- a flexible cytology brush may be used to collect cells which are subsequently smeared on a microscope slide
Bronchial cytology is commonly used in the diagnosis of lung tumours.
