reasons for recurrent VTE despite anticoagulation

The following conditions are associated with an increased risk for recurrent thromboembolism despite anticoagulation:

  • anatomic compression (i.e. May-Thurner syndrome, Thoracic Outlet syndrome, etc.)

  • antiphospholipid syndrome

  • cancer

  • dysfibrinogenemia

  • heparin-induced thrombocytopenia

  • myeloproliferative Neoplasm-uncontrolled (e.g. Polycythemia Vera, Essential Thrombocythemia)

  • paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria

  • subtherapeutic anticoagulation (1)
