- hypoalbuminaemia, e.g. malnutrition, chronic liver disease

- infection, e.g. coxsackie virus, tuberculosis
- connective tissue disease, e.g. SLE
- metastases, e.g. breast, bronchus
- hypothyroidism
- uraemia
- radiation
- blood, e.g. aortic dissection, trauma
