Possible causes of hypoxaemia include:

  • cardio-respiratory disorders
    • hypoventilation
    • a mismatch of ventilation-perfusion
    • venous to arterial shunt
    • diffusion impairment

  • low inspired O2 e.g. high altitude

  • a pathological desaturation of venous blood e.g. may rarely be caused by carboxyhaemoglobin
