Movement
Passive and active movement of the hip may be assessed but:
- passive movement is usually less painful than active
- the additional information gained from then assessing active movement may be slight
Procedure:
- assess the passive range first
- assess fixed flexion deformity by Thomas's test
- normal ranges for passive movement in degrees are: - flexion (130) - extension (10) - abduction (45) - adduction (30) - external rotation } in flexion (40) and extension (40) - internal rotation } in flexion (50) and extension (40)
- other tests as appropriate
- consider whether to proceed to assess active movement
