Congenital herniae usually result from an intrinsic abdominal wall weakness that is exacerbated by raised intra-abdominal pressure, e.g. from coughing or straining at stool.

Acquired herniae are more common with increasing age. They result from a weakness and fatty infiltration of muscle, or, from the line of weakness created by operative incisions.
