Hepatomegaly (smooth generalised enlargement)
The causes of smooth, generalised hepatomegaly with jaundice:
- infective causes:
- viral hepatitis
- bacterial, for example Weil's disease
- protozoal, for example amoebic abscess
- parasitic, for example hydatid cyst
- extra-hepatic biliary tract obstruction
- cholangitis
- portal pyaemia
Without jaundice:
- congestive cardiac failure
- liver cirrhosis
- reticuloses
- hepatic vein obstruction - Budd-Chiari syndrome
- amyloidosis
