The causes of smooth, generalised hepatomegaly with jaundice:

  • infective causes:
    • viral hepatitis
    • bacterial, for example Weil's disease
    • protozoal, for example amoebic abscess
    • parasitic, for example hydatid cyst
  • extra-hepatic biliary tract obstruction
  • cholangitis
  • portal pyaemia

Without jaundice:

  • congestive cardiac failure
  • liver cirrhosis
  • reticuloses
  • hepatic vein obstruction - Budd-Chiari syndrome
  • amyloidosis
