The oesophagus, in keeping with the rest of the gastrointestinal tract in which it is in continuity, has four layers within its wall. These are, from inside to outside:

  • mucosa
  • submucosa
  • muscular layer
  • fibrous layer

Only the most inferior few centimetres of the oesophagus within the abdomen is covered with serosa.
