Superior is the adjective that describes an object nearer the head end or upper part of the body in the anatomical position. For example, the eye is superior to the mouth.

In neuroanatomy, embryology and comparative anatomy, cephalic and cranial are adjectives often used interchangeably to indicate the same relationship where the anatomical position is not attained.

Superior should be contrasted with the adjective inferior.
