Avulsion injury of the lumbar spine

Last reviewed dd mmm yyyy. Last edited dd mmm yyyy

Authoring team

Powerful muscles attach to the transverse processes of the lumbar spine and may avulse them for example, in violent twisting or flexing movements, or muscle spasm.

An avulsed transverse process itself is not serious and does not require any specific treatment except for analgesia and gradual mobilisation. The pain and muscle spasm may last for 6-8 weeks.
