There is generally a history of a fall from a height and landing on one or both heels.
On examination the heel is broad and bruised on the sole. There is reduction in the normal concavity below the lateral malleolus. The tissues in the heel are thickened and tender. The ankle joint can be moved but the subtalar joint is inflexible.
