As part of the primary survey the neurological status may be quickly assessed using the Glasgow Coma Scale. An even shorter way of assessing the patient may be abbreviated as AVPU: A - the patient is fully ALERT V - the patient responds to VOCAL commands P - the patient only responds to PAIN U - the patient is completely UNCONSCIOUS
